The restlessness of the contemporary time has been presented in an experimental play titled ‘Kaalchaoutisha’ that was premiered on Tuesday at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Cultural organisation Shadhona produced the play, which has been written by Shahman Moishan and directed by Riaz Mahmud.
The seven-act play Kaalchautisha, which literally means the rhythm of time, satirises the contemporary time through the story of a married couple Ababil and Charya.
But Shahman Moishan’s play does not develop in linear way; rather it goes to touch many aspects of life, society and state that directly or directly impact on individuals.
Kudos goes to Moishan for his brilliant diction and poetic expression of restlessness of the urban life. But, he cannot avoid criticism either as the story seemed to lack connecting links.
The play opens with a monologue by Ababil, who appears to be over-stressed by his family and job. The monologue features how the person is over-burdened with petty material things and its impact on his conjugal life.
The second scene of the play is another monologue by Charya who also narrates her unhappy life.
Though the play basically centres on Ababil and Charya, their friends, who appear in a single scene, also have same bitter experiences as Ababil and Charya do.
In fact, the play has not focused only on the personal loss and ruin family life of the working couple but has also depicted the downfall of the society where every individual is confronted with fear, escapism and self-centeredness.
The play, however, does not end with the negative note, rather suggests people to develop relation with nature for peace.
Director Riaz Mahmud deserves plaudit for successfully creating a surrealistic scene that shows peace in life, which can be achieved through harmonious bond between human beings and nature.
Use of videography, music and light enriched the aesthetic beauty of the production. Ashik Rahman Leon and Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma performed well in the role of Ababil and Charya respectively.
