National stalwart Liton Das made an immediate mark in the ongoing National Cricket League when he smashed the fastest double hundred in Bangladesh’s first-class cricket on the third day of the second round match in Rajshahi on Wednesday.
Liton carried his international form in the four-day competition and broke his own record within six months as he completed his double ton in just 140 deliveries to drive Rangpur to a safe zone against Rajshahi, guiding the team to 319-2 in their second innings.
In Khulna, Ziaur Rahman struck 112 off 246 balls while Afif Hossain remained unbeaten on 81 off 132 as the hosts reached 349-7 against Barishal in their first innings to take a 50-run lead at stumps.
In a rain-effected match at Fatullah, Shadman Islam missed out his maiden double ton in first-class cricket as Dhaka Metro took a 181-run lead over Dhaka Division in the first innings after being bowled out for 387 runs.
The play was washed for second successive day in match between Chattogram and Sylhet in Cox’s Bazar due to rain under the direct influence of Cyclonic storm Titili.
Rangpur v Rajshahi
Rajshahi took a massive first innings lead of 438 runs over Rangpur as they declared their inning on 589-4 after resuming on 419-2.
Overnight unbeaten batsman Junaed Sidique struck his 14th first-class ton as the left-hander remained unbeaten on 100 off 199 balls after Farhad Hossain (62) and Jahirul Islam (55) hit fifties.
However, Rangpur opener Liton had a different idea as he struck 32 fours and four sixes to complete his second double ton in first-class cricket before he was dismissed for 203 off 142 balls in final over of the day.
Liton, who completed his century off 81 balls, surpassed his own record previous fastest double century when achieved the feat off 190-ball for BCB North against Central Zone in BCL match this year.
Liton added 219 runs with Mahmudul Hasan (72 not out) for the second wicket after a 98-run opening stand with Jahid Jabed (35) to revive the hopes of saving the game.
Khulna v Barishal
Resuming on 199-6, Khulna’s overnight batsmen Ziaur Rahman and Afif Hossain frustrated Barishal bowlers, adding 150 runs to their overnight score to finish the day on a strong note.
Ziaur, who resumed on 46, smashed his eighth first-class ton before he was finally dismissed by Mosaddek Hossain.
Rain came into the play after the dismissal of Ziaur and the play was stopped for the day with Afif stranding on 81, hitting eight fours and a six.
Dhaka v Metro
Metro, who resumed on 312-4 replying to Dhaka’s 206, lost Shadman early in the day and despite Mehrab Hossain jnr (41) and Zabid Hossain (32 not out) made some contributions they were finally bowled out for 387.
Dhaka pacer Salauddin Sakil bagged 4-80 while Shahadat Hossain and Nazmul Islam shared two wickets each.
Dhaka lost both their openers – Rony Talukdar (four) and Abdul Mazid (18) early in their second inngs before rain interrupted the day’s play as Dhaka made 50-2 in 14.5 overs.
Saif Hasan remained unbeaten on 27 off 34 balls.
