Chittagong University teacher Maidul Islam was remanded for three days in police custody on Monday as a case was filed under Section 57 of Information and Communication Technology Act for defaming prime minister Sheikh Hasina in his Facebook post.
Chattogram district police inspector (prosecution) Bijon Kumar Barua said that police sought five days remand for CU assistant professor of Sociology department Maidul Islam.
After hearing senior judicial magistrate Shahidullah Kaisar granted three days remand for him.
The plaintiff’s lawyer Bhulan Lal Bhoumik said that they applied to halt the hearing as they had applied for bail in High Court. But the court did not consider it and ordered to interrogate him.
On September 24, Chittagong court ordered to send Maidul to jail on charges of defaming prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The court sent him to jail denying his bail petition after he surrendered before the court on completion of his eight weeks bail granted by the High Court.
Bangladesh Chhatra League’s CU unit’s former executive member Md Iftekhar Uddin Ayaz filed a case against him under Section 57 of ICT Act with Hathazari Police Station on July 23.
Chittagong University authorities also temporarily suspended Maidul Islam on September 25.
