A Rajshahi court on Monday sent a truck owner, its driver and helper to jail in connection with the incident of a road accident that killed youth on September 9.
Babu Azad, 37, son of Barajahan Ali of Malshira area of Tanor upazila, driver Jibon, 37, son of Ayub Ali of Uzirpur area of Paba upazila, and helper Bulbul, 27, son of Abdur Rahman of Pashchim Talaimari area, were sent to jail after they were produced before court on Monday afternoon, said Kashiadanga police officer-in-charge Rabiul Islam.
On September 9, a cow-laden truck hit a shop adjacent to Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway, leaving Maruf Hossain, 16, critically injured. Later, Maruf died from his injuries.
On the following day, Maruf’s grandfather Azizul Islam filed a murder case against the three with the Kashiadanga police, the OC said.
Meanwhile, protesting at the court’s decision, transport workers blocked Rajshahi-Natore, Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj, and Rajshahi-Dhaka highways around 2:00pm, causing immense suffering to people.
Later, they withdrew their blockade around 5:00pm after Rajshahi city mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton assured them of looking into the incident.
Rajshahi Trucks, Tank-lorries and Covered Van Workers Union president Saidul Islam said that they blocked the highways demanding unconditional release of the truck owner, driver and helper.
