‘Peddler’ killed, another injured in ‘gunfights’

Suspected drug peddler Asadul, 30, was killed in ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion at Mirpur Beribandh area in the capital early Monday while another suspect was arrested after he got injured in a separate ‘gunfight’ at Chakla Hall Mor, Kaliganj, Lalmonirhat, the RAB and the police said.
Asadul of T and T Slum in the capital was wanted in at least eight cases, RAB -2 Operation Officer Saiful Malik told New Age.
In Lalmonirhat, Sumon Mia, 28, of Kamarpara, Aditmari, Lalmonirhat, was injured in gunfight. He was wanted in at least 11 drug-related cases, Kaliganj police station’s sub-inspector Badal Kumar Mandal said.
The latest casualties increased the death toll to 242 in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drive since May 15.
RAB -2’s Saiful said Asadul was declared dead after he was taken to the at Suhrwadry Medical College Hospital with critical injuries he suffered during ‘gunfight’ with RAB at Mirpur Beribandh area at about 3:30am.
RAB seized a pistol, a shooter gun, four kg of hemp and more than 1,000 Yaba tablets from the spot, he said.
SI Badal of Kaliganj police station said Sumon was hit by bullets on his both legs during ‘gunfight’ with the police at Chakla Hall Mor, Kaliganj, Lalmonirhat early Monday.
He said that injured Sumon was taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where he is under treatment.
The police officer claimed that they seized 100 bottles of Phensedyl from the spot.
In the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police during drives at different areas under the Kotwali police station on Monday arrested 14 suspected drug peddlers and seized 210 Yaba tablets, 1 kg of hemp, 260 grams of heroin, 26.5 litres of local liquor and 20 ampules of injectable drugs from their possession. According to DMP the drive was conducted from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
DMP also arrested 76 suspected drug peddlers and addicts and seized 9948 Yaba tablets,6.28 kg of hemp, 861 grams of heroin, 45 bottles of local liquor and 110 ampules of injectable drugs from their possession, said DMP officials.
