The police produced Mashiur Rahman Rony, Narayanganj district unit president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed student organisation, before a court on Monday.
‘Acting on a tip-off, we arrested Rony along with a firearm and three bullets in Dapa Idrakpur area of Fatulla in Narayanganj in the morning and produced him before the court,’ said Fatulla police officer-in-charge Manjur Quader.
On the other hand, Rony’s family alleged that a group of people, identifying themselves as members of Detective Branch of Police, picked him up from the capital’s Paltan on Saturday.
Rony’s brother Mohibur Rahman Rana said that an unknown person called him from Rony’s mobile phone on Saturday night and informed him that Rony had been detained by the DB police.
The unknown caller also demanded Tk 3,00,000 to them as ransom, Rana said.
The family held a press conference at Narayanganj Press Club on Sunday in this regard. The victim’s relatives, friends and political fellows, including Naryanganj BNP senior vice-president Sakhawat Hossain khan, were present at the programme.
However, when asked about Rony’s family’s allegation, the Fatulla police OC did not make any comment. The Narayanganj DB police also denied the allegation.
The police produced Rony before Narayanganj senior judicial magistrate Mahmudul Mohsin’s court with a seven-day remand plea while the court granted three days for interrogating him, said his lawyer Shakhawat Hossain Khan.
In the court, Rony alleged that he was picked up by DB police on Saturday and was tortured brutally, the lawyer said.
