A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the members of Rapid Action Battalion at Radhakrishnapur Ghaghatpara area in Rangpur on early Friday raising the death toll in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drives to 232 since May 15.
The deceased, Shawkat Ghughu, a man in his thirties, was based in Dewdoba Dangirpar area in the town, was also involved in robbery, RAB claimed.
Ghughu was named in at least 13 cases with different police stations of the district for peddling drugs and committing robbery, according to RAB.
RAB-13 media wing officer Khandoker Golam Mortuza said, acting on a tip off that Ghughu along with his accomplices had been selling drugs at Radhakrishnapur, a team of RAB raided the area at about 3:00am.
Sensing the presence of law enforcing members, Ghughu and his associates opened fire on RAB members, forcing them to retaliate by opening fire that left Gughu killed.
The others managed to escape the scene.
He also said RAB members seized a pistol, a magazine, three cartridges and a small amount of drugs from the spot.
