Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samiti secretary general Mozammel Haque Chowdhury freed on bail from the Dhaka Central Jail on Thursday after a metropolitan magistrate’s court in the capital refused police application to implicate him in a case filed earlier under the Explosive Substances Act.
Dhaka Central Jail’s jailor Mahabubul Islam Milon told New Age that they released Mozammel from the jail at 8:47 pm after examining the document regarding his bail granted by the court on September 11.
Police arrested Mozammel from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj on September 6, two days after one Dulal from the transport sector filed a case against him, alleging that the road safety campaigner had demanded
Tk 2 lakh as extortion and he had to pay Tk 10, 000 to the man.
Mozammel, who was vocal against frequent road accidents by reckless driving, was also remanded in custody for interrogation in the extortion case.
On September 11, a metropolitan magistrate court in the capital granted him bail as a leading newspaper published a report stating that Mozammel was implicated in a false case.
Plaintiff Dulal told the newspaper that he did not know Mozammel personally and the case was filed under pressure from the transport leaders.
On September 10, the police appealed to the court to implicate him in a case and prayed for remand in its custody for 10 days to prolong his detention.
The case that was pending with the Kafrul police station, filed under the explosive substance act.
