The Bangladesh Nationalist Party will observe token hunger strikes in the capital and in district headquarters in demand of unconditional release of the party’s imprisoned chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The two-hour-long token hunger strike will be observed across the country from 10:00am.
In Dhaka, the strike will be organised at the Institution of Engineers, according to a text message sent by the party’s assistant office secretary Belal Ahmed at 7:45pm on Tuesday.
Earlier in the morning, BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing in the party office said over 300 leaders and activists of BNP and its front and associate organisations, including 275 in Dhaka, were arrested across the country on Monday.
He condemned and protested against the arrests, including that of BNP’s assistant religious affairs secretary John Gomez on Monday.
Rizvi alleged that the party’s national executive committee member Abu Bakar Siddique had remained missing since Monday.
Khaleda was sentenced to five years in jail in a graft case filed by a Dhaka special court on February 8.
