Suspected peddler killed in Rajshahi ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler was killed allegedly in a ‘gunfight’ with the Rapid Action Battalion at Dhurail, Mohonpur upazila, Rajshahi early Tuesday.

The latest casualty increased the death toll in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drive to 231 since May 15.

Deceased Dulal Mia, 45, of Hariharpur, Mohanpur, Rajshahi, was wanted by police stations in at least four cases, said RAB-5 deputy commander AM Ashraful Islam.

He said ten men began to flee seeing a RAB squad patrolling the area.

Being chased by RAB, he said, the suspected peddlers opened fire when RAB retaliated and after the gunfight was over, said Major AM Ashraful Islam, Dulal was lying injured while the others escaped.

He said that Dulal was taken to Mohonpur Upazlia Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Major Ashraf said a pistol, one bullet and 506 Yaba tablets were seized from the spot.

Dulal’s body was sent to Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital for post mortem examination, he said.
