A parliamentary body on Monday once again recommended that the government should raise the maximum age limit for government jobs to 35 years from the existing 30.
The parliamentary standing committee on public administration ministry at a meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban also asked the ministry to further increase the age limit for retirement from government jobs.
Currently, the age limit for entry into public service is 30 years while the retirement age limit is 59 years, but 60 years for the freedom fighters.
On August 29, finance minister AMA Muhith ruled out the possibility of raising the age limit to 32 years for entry into government jobs.
‘Before the election, I believe, there’ll be no change in the age limit,’ he told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase at the Cabinet Division.
Earlier in June, the parliamentary body recommended that the age limit for entry into civil service should be raised to 35 years.
Prime minister  Sheikh Hasina on January 31 told parliament that her government had no plan right now to increase the existing retirement age in the government service as that would create various problems and many public servants might not get due promotions.
Public administration minister Syed Ashraful Islam told parliament on June 6 that the government had no plan to raise the age limit for entering government jobs arguing that the number of job seekers would increase highly if the government raised the age limit.
Civil service is the single largest job sector in Bangladesh. It has become more lucrative to students after the government doubled the salary for civil servants in the latest pay scale in 2017.
High officials of the public administration ministry on Monday informed the committee that increasing age limit in public services was the government’s policy related issue.
The ministry will take necessary measures in this regard following the government’s decision, the officials told the committee.
The public administration ministry recently sent a summary to the Prime Minister’s Office suggesting increase in the age limit for entering in the government services to 32 years, meeting sources said.
Ruling Awami League lawmaker HM Ashiqur Rahman presided over the meeting. Committee members Ismat Ara Sadique, also state minister for public administration, AL lawmakers ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, among others, attended the meeting.
