The High Court Division on Wednesday directed metropolitan sessions judge Imrul Kayes to dispose of aclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam’ bail application within today.
Imrul kept the bail application pending since August 14.
A vacation bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman issued the directive after disposing a petition filed by Shahidul Alam’ wife and columnist Rahnuma Ahmed on August 27.
Petitioner’s lawyer Sara Hossain submitted that she came to the High Court Division seeking bail for Shahidul Alam after the metropolitan judge set September 11 to hear the bail application he had filed on August 14.
On August 20, the judge Imrul rejected her request to hear the bail application earlier since Shahidul Alam
has been ill in the jail custody.
Sara Hossain was assisted by Jyotirmoy Barua and Ripon Kumar Barua.
On Monday also attorney general Mahbubey Alam vehemently opposed granting bail to Shahidul Alam, citing the ground that his bail application was pending in the court of judge Imrul.
On September 4, another vacation bench of the High Court Division declined to hear Shahidul Alam’ bail application on the plea that a judge felt embarrassed.
On August 12 a metropolitan magistrate sent the 63-year Shahidul Alam to the Dhaka Central Jail without hearing his lawyer after he was produced following interrogations by the DB on remand.
On the night of August 5 Shahidul Alam was picked up at his Dhanmondi residence and took him to the office of the Detective Branch for interrogations during which he was tortured physically and mentally.
He was detained by plainclothes police from his home hours after giving an interview to Al Jazeera about student protests which he documented and discussed in Facebook Live.
Shahidul Alam has been implicated in a case under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act on the allegation that he had incited schoolchildren’s movement for safe roads.
