Two people including an elderly man of a Christian family were wounded in an attack carried out allegedly by the ruling Awami League activists in Jessore on Sunday.
The wounded Juran Das, 80, and his son Salmon Das, 40, of village Gilapole under Ulashi union of Sharsha in the district, were given first aid in a local health centre.
Salmon Das said Tariqul Islam Milon, education affairs secretary of Juba League, and his accomplices attacked them as they refused to pay the money demanded by the attackers.
The attackers also vandalised the house, he added.
Ainal Haque, chairman of Ulashi union council, also expressed his agreement with what the victims had claimed.
Sharsha police station officer-in-charge Taslim Ahmed Tushar said they arrested eight suspects over the attack.
The arrested are Shariful Islam, 32, Aminur Rahman, 28, Shymal Kumar Das, 35, Asadul, 28, Akhtarul Islam, 21, Ashraful Islam, 23, Ashik Hossain, 29 and Kamruzzaman Khokon, 30.
Tariqul Islam Milon, however, dined the allegation saying it was slander on his reputation.
