The Bangladesh National Party-backed mayoral candidate in Rajshahi City Corporation Election, Mossaddique Hossain Bulbul, filed a case with election tribunal demanding the scrapping of election results.
Bulbul’s lawyer Abul Kashem filed the case on behalf of him on Thursday, advocate Parvez Toufique Jahedi, one of Bulbul’s five lawyers, who was present at the hearing, said.
The case was filed a-day after newly-elected RCC mayor AHM Khairuzzman Liton took oath of office at a ceremony held at the Shapla Hall of prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s office in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Parvez Toufique Jahedi said that in the case Bulbut set out a number of allegations, including that supporters of the ruling Awami League-backed candidate had occupied 138 polling centres and exhausted the ballot papers before voting had ended.
The tribunal judge, Abu Sayeed, took the case in cognizance after a hearing, he added.
Contacted, Mossaddique Hossain Bulbul told New Age that there were widespread irregularities in every poling centre. ‘So I think this election needs to be canceled. For that I filed the case’, he said.
On July 30, the RCC election was held where Awami League mayoral candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton won the polls, bagging 165,096 votes while his rival Mossaddique got 77,700 votes.
