Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday said the Election Commission should ensure participatory elections.
She said this while speaking at the inaugural session of two-day conference of the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia in Dhaka.
She said the parliament was the epicenter of parliamentary democracy for this people’s trust should be earned in national parliamentary elections
‘Transparency in election process is one of the conditions for free and fair election. The main goal of FEMBoSA is to achieve peoples’ trust after ensuring transparency in electoral process,’ she said.
She said transparency in elections was undoubtedly difficult but it should be ensured as the free, fair, participatory, and neutral elections were the foundation of democracy.
She also said stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, voters, media, government institutions and rights groups, were necessary to participate in the election to ensure transparency.
Chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda said the EC was committed to holding free, fair and neutral elections in according to the constitution.
He said the FEMBoSA conference would encourage the EC to hold a participatory election.
Attending the programme, former CEC ATM Shamsul Huda said that there was no hurry to introduce of electronic voting in general election.
He suggested the EC to gain people’s trust on EVM using it in the local government elections.
Representatives from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives were present at the conference.
The FEMBoSA was formed under the auspices of Bangladesh Election Commission in 2010.
