Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday expressed concern over reported arrest of more than 400 leaders and activists of the party last week.
BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said over 400 leaders and activists of the party and its front and associate organisations were arrested and several thousand were implicated in fabricated charges under Special Powers Act last week.
Cases were filed against BNP chairperson’s advisers Taimur Alam Khandaker, Mashiur Rahman, the party’s commerce affairs secretary and former lawmaker Salahuddin Ahmed, Dhaka South City unit general secretary Kazi Abul Bashar and Juba Dal president Saiful Alam Nirab, he said.
Condemning the arrests and implication, Rizvi at a news briefing at the party’s central office in Dhaka said the government, being frightened of losing power, decided to harass the opposition party activists.
The arrests were made and cases were filed at places, including Dhaka, Narayanganj Kushtia, Netrakona, Bogra, Jhenaidah, Bagherhat, Narail, Sunamganj and Pirojpur, Rizvi claimed.
He said so far cases on ‘false’ and ‘fabricated’ charges were filed against 2,800 leaders and activists in the Mymensingh division.
Over 50 leaders and activists were arrested in Kushtia. They include Daulatpur upazila BNP’s joint general secretary Abdul Bari, Juba Dal general secretary Asadul Hoque, Chhatra Dal general secretary Fazlul Hoque Rana, Krishak Dal general secretary Saidul Hoque, Rizvi said adding that two cases were filed accusing 55 leaders and activists in the upazila.
Cases were filed with different police stations in Dhaka accusing over 400 leaders and activists including BNP’s commerce affairs secretary Salahuddin Ahmed, Dhaka South City general secretary Kazi Abul Bashar, Juba Dal president Saiful Alam Nirab, Rizvi said.
Police arrested 45 leaders and activists in Sunamganj, including Taherpur upazila unit general secretary Ruhul Amin, while cases were filed accusing 456 leaders and activists in 11 upazilas of the district, he mentioned.
According to Rizvi over 25 leaders and activists, including Jhenaidah district BNP general secretary Abdul Malek, were arrested while a case was filed accusing 101 people including BNP chairperson’s adviser and district president Mashiur Rahman, case filed in Narayanganj against 57 leaders and activists including BNP chairperson’s adviser Taimur Alam Khandaker.
In Pirojpur police arrested six, including district BNP organising secretary Shahidul Islam Kismat, district Juba Dal president Mizanur Rahman and district Chhatra Dal general secretary Sheikh Badiur Zaman while cases filed against more than ten top leaders of front and associate organisations of the district.
Cases were filed against 35 leaders and activists in Bogra district, including district Juba Dal president Sipar Al Bakhtiar, four from Bagerhat, including Fakirhat Sadar unit Chhatra Dal general secretary Md Delwar.
While police arrested five in Narail including district Chhatra Dal organising secretary Rubayed Shakil and cases were filed against 35, including Narail district BNP general secretary Monirul Islam, Rizvi said.
He strongly demanded immediate release of arrested leaders and activists and withdrawal of the cases.
BNP leaders, including AZM Zahid Hossain, Abul Khaer Bhuiyan and Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, were present at the briefing.
