One killed in Awami League infighting in Faridpur

An activist of ruling Awami League was killed and at least 15 others were injured in a clash between two groups of the ruling party over establishing supremacy in Khoar village under Saltha upazila in Faridpur on Monday night.

The deceased was identified as Sakhawat Hossain alias Saka Matubbor, 55, of the same village.

The villagers said supporters of Atghar union parishad chairman Shahidul Islam Shohag, also joint general secretary of Saltha upazila unit Awami League, and his rival Matubbor group led by Kawsar Khan, also local AL leader, were locked in an altercation at Goalpara village of the union in the afternoon.

As a sequel of the incident, the supporters of the UP chairman and Aminur Matubbor, also an AL leader of the area, were locked into a clash in the evening at Khoar village.

Both the groups used locally made sharp and lethal weapons during the clash that lasted at least an hour.

Later, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control, the villagers said.

Saltha Police Station officer-in-charge Delwar Hossain said that Saka Matubbor, a supporter of Aminur Matubbor, who was hacked by rivals during the factional clashes was declared dead when he was taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

The OC said the injured were given treatment at FMCH.

He said additional police forces were deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.
