A Dhaka court on Sunday sent assistant sub-inspector of Dhaka Metropolitan Police to jail in connection with the killing of Old Dhaka businessman Yunus Hawlader.
The court of judicial magistrate Atiqul Islam gave the order after ASI Nur Alam was placed before the court with a plea to question him for five days in police custody in a case pertaining to the murder of Yunus Hawlader, who was found dead in South Keraniganj on June 25, said Chief Judicial Magistrate Court’s additional public prosecutor Anwarul Kabir Babu.
Atiqul Islam passed the order as hearing on the interrogation prayer was not held as the case documents were not reached to the court from the CJM court, Anwarul Kabir added.
Nur Alam was arrested in the office of the metropolitan police’s Wari zone on Saturday night, said sub-inspector Golam Mostafa of Dakhkhin Keraniganj Police Station, who has been investigating the case.
Nur Alam was arrested as his name was mentioned in the confessional statements of two other accused in the case.
Officials involved in investigation of the case said that South Keraniganj police recovered the body of elderly man, Yunus, an agricultural tools businessman at Old Dhaka’s Nababpur and resident of Shyampur, from Hasnabad area under South Keraniganj on June 25 and the deceased’s son Atiquzzaman lodged a case with the police accusing unidentified people for the murder.
They said that the police later arrested Yunus’ tenant Ohid Sumon, 27, and Saber Hossain Shamim, 43.
Ohid gave confessional statement before a court in Dhaka mentioning that a case was lodged against Yunus with the Shyampur police station over human trafficking in Jaunary after police arrested some people, who rented a house of Yunus several months back, for promoting prostitution and human trafficking.
After being implicated in the case, Yunus, who never had any criminal charge filed against him, became very worried and tried to contact police officers to request them to drop his name from the case, said his wife Marufa Begum and his son Afiquzzaman.
Yunus asked his tenant Ohid Sumon to talk to his neighbour ASI Nur Alam to relieve him of the case, said officers investigating the case.
Nur Alam later demanded Tk 3 lakh for the task and Yunus agreed.
Later, on June 24 evening Ohid and Saber took the victim with Tk 3 lakh to the spot by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw to pay the money to Nur Alam.
Shamim hacked Yunus to death on the spot, left the body there, took away the money and went to Shyampur police station where they handed over the money to ASI Nur Alam, said the officers.
The investigators said Nur Alam used Shamim as his source.
