20 injured in clash between police, villagers in Tangail

At least 20 people including six police personnel were injured in a clash between police and locals of Konabari village at Gopalpur of Tangail on Sunday.

The mob attacked police and the police also fired 27 rounds of blank shots to disperse the crowd. 

Among the injured, two policemen were admitted to Gopalpur Upazila Health Complex.

Gopalpur police officer-in-charge Hasan Al Mamun said police had arrested one Shafiqul with 37 piece yaba tablets from Konabari area on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, locals of Konabari blocked the road and vandalized vehicles. Police went there and had to fire 27 rounds of blank shots to bring situation under control, he said.

Police also arrested two people — Suman and Sohel from the spot.  

Gopalpur municipality mayors Rakibul Huq Sana said police had arrested an innocent spice trader Shafikul on Saturday night and when his relatives when to meet him at Gopalpur police station there was an altercation between police and them. Police charged baton on the visitors that resulted breaking hand of an adolescent girl and it triggered anger among residents of Konabari, he said.

At one stage they brought out a huge procession blocked the road. Later police rushed there fired gunshots and charged baton on women and children going door to door of the village, he added.
