The police recovered the bullet-hit body of a suspected drug peddler from Keyar Math area of Jibannagar upazila in Chuadanga on Saturday morning, raising the death toll in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drive to 226 since May 15.
The deceased, Shahin Ali, 35, son of Munnaf Darji of Ashtalapara area of Jibannagar upazila town in Chuadanga, was in the list of suspected drug peddlers prepared by the home ministry, said Jibannagar police officer-in-charge Mahmudur Rahman.
Shahin, named in 10 cases lodged with the Jibannagar police on charge of drug peddling and murder, remained absconding for long, the OC said.
He said that local people found an unidentified body in the pool of blood at roadside in Keyar Math area and informed it to the police.
The police recovered the body from the spot at around 8:30am and took it to the police station.
Later, the victim’s family identified the body, that bore marks of bullet injuries in the head and chest, the OC said.
The victim might have been killed by rival drug peddlers over previous enmity, he added.
Besides, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 23 suspected drug peddlers and addicts raiding different areas in the capital in 24 hours till 6:00am on Saturday and seized 738 Yaba tablets, 857 grams of heroin and 90 grams of hemp from them, DMP officials said.
