Celebrated singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya has recorded a bhajan titled ‘Vaisnava jan to’, which will be released and played today across India at the Indian leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations programme.
She is the first Bangladeshi singer to render a popular bhajan of Gandhi for the celebrations programme.
Each year, the Indian government assigns a popular singer to render a favourite bhajan of Gandhi for playing it on his birth anniversary celebrations programme. This year, Banya has been selected to render Gandhi’s popular bhajan Vaisnava jan to.
The Gujarati bhajan was composed about six hundred years ago. The song advocates for establishing a discrimination free society.
Bannya could not be reached for comment as she was visiting India to participate at Gandhi’s birth anniversary celebrations programme.
