At least nine people, four of a family, were killed and 35 others injured in separate road accidents in Gaibandha and Netrokona districts Saturday.
In Gaibandha, five people, including the four of a family, were killed and 15 others injured.
The accident in Netrokona claimed the lives of four others and 20 were left injured.
Fatal accidents are occurring frequently on anarchic roads though it’s barely a month since countrywide school children’s protest on the demand of safe roads virtually brought the nation to a halt.
The school children suspended their protests after the government accepted their demands.
In Gaibandha, the head on collision took place between a Dhaka-bound bus of Darbar Saudia Paribahan and a Gaibandha bound trolley from the opposite direction on the Gaibandha-Palashbari Road at Mahadipur Rice Mill area at about 12.15AM on Saturday leaving five dead on the spot and 15 others injured, police told New Age.
The dead include Emdadul Huq, 26, of Chapia Mirganj, Sunderganj, Gaibandha, his wife Kakoli, 25, their five-year old daughter Ena Khatun, Emdad’s elder sister Afroza Begum, 30, and Sumon Mia, 30, of Mubaria, Dumki, Patuakhali, said Palashbari police station’s duty officer Md Hasibur Rahman.
The police station officer-in-charge Mostafizar Rahman said that being informed local people rushed to the spot and rescued and sent the injured persons to nearby hospitals.
At least five seriously injured persons were admitted to hospitals and two of them were shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical conditions, he said.
He said that the police seized the bus and the trolley but the drivers and helpers escaped.
In Netrokona, four people died on the spot and 20 others injured in head-on collision between a Dhaka-bound bus of Mayer Doa Paribahan and an auto rickshaw at Mashka Kanthaltala area under Kendua upazila in Netrokona at about 2.45PM, said Emarat Hossain Gazi officer-in-charge of Kendua police station.
The deceased include auto-rickshaw driver Jamal Mia, 35, of Balaishimul, Kendua, Nazir Uddin, 25, and Sharif Mia, 20, of Noapara, Kutubpur upazila and Murad Mia, 22, of Adarshanagar, Mohonganj, Netrokona.
Critically injured Golam Rabbani and Sakib Mia were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
All the four dead and the two critically injured were in the auto-rickshaw.
OC Emarat said that the auto-rickshaw had been smashed by the bus.
He said that they seized the bus but it’s driver fled away.
According to Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh data published on Friday, at least 259 people were killed and 960 others injured in 237 road accidents across the country between August 16 and August 28.
