State minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing on Friday said that the government had taken various steps to increase food production in the hill tract.
The minister said the Department of Agricultural Extension with Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute was trying to boost food production in Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachari districts so that cultivators can produce crops two-three times on the same land in a year.
The state minister said this as the chief guest while inaugurating a sub-station of Sugarcane Research Institute at Lemujiri Agapara area in Bandarban in the afternoon.
As part of the programme, Bir Bahadur said the government had established the Bandarban sub-station of the Sugarcane Research Institute at a cost of nearly Tk 1 crore.
Chaired by Sugarcane Research Institute director general M Amzad Hossen, the programme was also attended by executive director of Krishi Gobeshona Foundation Waes Kabir, DAE’s additional director Pronob Bhattachariya, additional deputy commissioner M Shafiul Alam and district council member Lakhipada Das.
