Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, could not disclaim responsibility for the deaths and injuries in the August 21 grenade attack incident.
‘I don’t know what verdict will be delivered by the court in the case, but it is sure that a strict punishment is waiting for Tarique. He must face the punishment,’ Obaidul Quader, also road
transport and bridges minister, said while addressing a meeting marking the National Morning Day in Sylhet.
Sylhet Awami League organised the rally on the Registrar Ground in the city in the afternoon.
Quader also criticised the BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman for his role in the Liberation War and during the assassination of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He also claimed that the former president Zia joined the Independence War in 1971 as ‘an agent of Pakistani force’ and alleged that Zia sheltered the collaborators of Pakistani occupying forces, rehabilitated them, and gave them impunity.
AL joint-general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Zahangir Kabir Nanak, office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, organising secretary Ahmad Hossain, Misbah Uddin Siraj, Khalid Ahmad Chowdhury and Enamul Haque Shamim addressed the programme as special guests.
AL Sylhet city president Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran chaired the programme that was addressed, among others, by local lawmaker Imran Ahmad, Mahmud-Us Samad Chowdhury, district unit acting president Luthfur Rahman and city general secretary Asad Uddin Ahmad.
