A special tribunal on stock market on Wednesday issued arrest warrant for businessman Aziz Mohammed Bhai in a case over 1996 stock market scam.
Tribunal judge Akbar Ali Sheikh issued the warrant letter.
The judge rejected a petition by defence lawyers Borhan Uddin and Mosharraf Hossain seeking more time for the indictment and issued the warrant letter which was sent to Motijheel police for arresting Aziz.
The tribunal set September 18 to start recording witness depositions. Former Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission executive director MA Rashid Khan, plaintiff of the case, is scheduled to give his
statement to the tribunal on that day.
Earlier on July 24, the prosecution began and the accused were Olympic Industries and Mohammed Bhai, the then chairman of the company who
died on January 9, and its director Aziz Mohammed Bhai.
The Olympic Industries scam case remained suspended for a period from 2013 following a High Court order. The case was filed in 1999 and sent to the special tribunal in 2015. On 30 November last year, the High Court lifted the suspension order.
Aziz Mohammad Bhai and Mohammad Bhai were accused for manipulating share prices in 1996 allegedly for illicit gains.
