The National Board of Revenue is set to launch automated auction system for all customs houses and national enquiry points for traders as part of customs automation in the country.
The NBR took the initiative to check irregularities and streamline the auction process, said officials of the revenue board.
On the other hand, national enquiry point (NEP) for customs will help traders, importers, exporters, manufacturers as well as general people in getting different customs-related information through making an online query.
The revenue board will also introduce a customs intelligence hotline to receive information with regard to smuggling of goods into or out of the country directly from people.
People will be able to give information on smuggling, money laundering, over-invoicing, under-invoicing and other customs related offences by calling a dedicated phone number or filling up an on-line form.
Customs wing of the NBR will launch all the three initiatives on September 6 at a programme in Dhaka.
The systems have been developed with the support of Bangladesh Trade Facilitation Activity project of the USAID.
Officials said that e-auction software would check irregularities and corruption related to auction of goods at customs houses.
All customs houses would gradually come under automated tender submission and scrutiny process, they said.
Auction process starting from tender bidding, scrutinising and disposal would be completed automated way for ensuring transparency, they added.
Customs houses arrange auctions to dispose of imported goods which were not cleared within 30 days from the date of unloading at ports, import-prohibited goods like motor vehicles of more than five years old, old computers and old motor parts.
Prior notice is given to the owner of goods before goods are put up for auction.
On the other hand, traders, passengers and other people can make their queries on customs related issues such as applicable rate of duties on import and export goods, baggage rules, customs rules and regulations on the online platform or NEP.
Dedicated customs officials would usually respond to the queries and provide information, clarification and documents within 72 hours, the officials said.
The internet-based platform would also provide public access to the vital information and documents required for conducting trade.
Mandatory forms and documents for import, export and transit would also be provided by the NEP.
