Finance minister AMA Muhith has approved a proposal to confer 45 per cent dearness allowance to journalists and employees working in the newspapers and news agencies from March 1.

On August 28, Muhith gave the approval to the proposal placed by finance division via the ministry of information, according to a senior finance division official.

The approval is likely to be sent to the information ministry on Thursday for further administrative measures, said the official on Wednesday.

According to the finance division proposal, the ninth wage board for newspapers and news agencies was appointed on January 29.

Led by Supreme Court retired judge, Justice Md Nizamul Huq the wage board in its third meeting held on March 21 decided to announce 45 per cent dearness allowance from March.

At present, journalists and employees working in the newspapers and news agencies are getting wages with 15 slabs under the eighth wage board since 2013.

The highest wage is Tk 35,857- Tk 56,857 and the lowest Tk 3,850-Tk 5,725.

On July 1, the High Court asked the government to explain in two weeks why the ninth wage board for journalists and newspapers employees would not be declared illegal.

The court, however, refused to issue a stay of further proceedings in the wage board.

The writ petition was filed by Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh challenging the legality of the wage board.
