A suspected robber was killed allegedly in a ‘gunfight’ with the Rapid Action Battalion at Majher Char in the Baleshwar River under Patharghata upazila, Barguna early Tuesday.
The 35-year old casualty was identified as Md Rafiqul Islam.
According to Patharghata police station officer-in-charge Molla Mohammad Khabir Hossain, Rafiq was member of ‘Noa Bahini’, a gang that committed robbery and illegally collected tolls from fishermen in Baleshwar River and the adjacent areas.
RAB officials said the ‘gunfight’ occurred at Majher Char, also under Sarankhola range of the Sunderbans, early Tuesday when members of Noa Bahini opened fire on the RAB men while they were on regular patrol. A text message sent to media by RAB headquarters said they also seized arms and ammunitions from the spot.
Patharghata OC said that they sent the body to Barguna Sadar Hospital for post mortem examination.
