The Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate on Monday directed the jail authorities to take steps according to the Jail Code regarding division 1 facilities wanted by detained acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam.
CMM Saifuzzaman Hiro gave the directive after hearing Shahidul Alam’s application in which he asked the authorities to provide him division 1 facilities consistent to his social status.
While moving the application, lawyer Ehshanul Haque Shomaji made a forceful plea to provide division 1 facilities in the jail
to national and international award winning photographer Shahidul Alam.
The lawyer reminded the magistrate that Shahidul Alam was entitled to get division 1 facilities in the jail under the Jail Code’s Rule 910.
The lawyer cited in the hearing the statements issued by famous global personalities demanding Shahidul Alam’s release.
The lawyer said that the authorities ought to keep in their minds that Shahidul Alam is the son of the 1996 Independence Award winning physician Quazi Abul Monsur and the 1999 Rokeya Padak winner Kazi Anwara Monsur.
He said that 10 Nobel laureates including Amartya Sen demanded Shahidul Alam’s immediate release.
Shahidul Alam was tortured physically and mentally by the Detective Branch in its custody after he was picked up from his home on August 5.
On August 12 a metropolitan magistrate sent Shahidul Alam to the Dhaka Central Jail without hearing his lawyer after he was produced in the court after interrogations for seven days by the DB in its remand.
His lawyer complained that Shahidul Alam was denied treatment until now.
