A man was killed and 100 others were injured in a clash between residents of two neighbouring villages in Sunamganj on Saturday.
The deceased was Bashir Uddin, 50, son of Soab Ali, of Shibpur village under Dowarabazar upazila in the district, police said.
Local people said that there was a longstanding enmity between the residents of neighbouring Shibpur and Rajanpur over establishing dominance in Bangabandhu Bazar, a marketplace in the locality.
On Friday evening, Billal Miah of Shibpur locked in an argument with rickshaw puller Taj Uddin over the rent and on the following day, the residents of the two villages clashed on the playground near Bangabandhu Bazar.
About 100 people of the both villages were injured in the two-hour clash that lasted till 1:00 pm, the locals said.
Dowarabazar police officer-in-charge Sushil Ranjan Das said that among the injured, 30 people were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital after being rescued from the spot.
Bashir Uddin died on his way to hospital, Sushil said.
Rest of the injured were offered treatment at health complexes of Dowarabazar and Chhatak upazilas, he added.
Twenty four people were arrested for their suspected involvement in the clash, the police officer said in the evening, adding that the process of filing a case was underway.
