The Canadian band Magic started off their journey on 2012 and exploded out in 2014 with their Hot 100-topping single ‘Rude’.  Rude was the debut single from their debut studio album ‘Don’t kill the magic’. The song was originally released on October 2013 as a promotion and later released on 2014 by Sony Music Entertainment. The song became an international commercial success as soon as it was released and peaked at number six on the Canadian Hot 100 and internationally topped the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom. The song is a reggae fusion and was written by the lead vocal Nasri Atweh, Mark Pellizzer, Ben Spivak and Alex Tanas.

The song tells a story of a person, a father, who is asking for her daughter’s hand. It is actually based on the lead singer Nasri who has been in an unhealthy relationship. The music video is comical and has a retro feel to it. All the members of the band are seen in the music video dancing and fooling around along with the lead Nasri who is in love with a girl and asking her father to give blessing for their marriage but the father refuses but later they get married anyway. The song has a cool reggae bouncy sound to it which will get you dancing and humming with it and this is why the song has been a radio anthem for a long period. It has a number of guitar solos which is pretty easy on the ears and has a very catchy and groovy tune to it. Nasri’s melodious voice and cute and relatable lyrics is what grabs the most attention. The music and video feels like a throwback of 80s and 90s music which makes you feel nostalgic and blissful.

The song surely faced a lot of criticism for being whiny, clingy and not original. But I guess this is what the song actually needed. One magazine also charted ‘Rude’ as the worst song of 2014 for its old fashioned music. Some people were also not on board with brining back reggae but it’s fun to hear retro music once in a while.

All these judgments couldn’t stop the song from becoming an international success and entering the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 97 on May 10, 2014. Magic is definitely a band whose movements are worth watching. Their fans are eagerly waiting for them to drop their next hit which will be as good as ‘Rude.
