Eid-ul Azha was celebrated across the country on Wednesday with due solemnity and spirit of sacrifice.
After offering Eid prayers at mosques and Eidgahs across the country in the morning amid heightened security, the Muslims sacrificed animals to Allah in emulation of the spirit of sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim.
They exchanged Eid greetings with friends, neighbours and relatives and distributed meat among them and the needy.
Eid-ul-Azah is celebrated on the 10th of Zil-Hajj according to the Hijri calendar to commemorate the sacrifice offered by Prophet Ibrahim 4,000 years ago.
The country’s main Eid congregation was held at National Eidgah in the capital at 8:00am, where president Abdul Hamid offered his Eid prayers along with Supreme Court judges, diplomats, senior civil and military officials and prominent citizens.
The main congregation, where women also offered their Eid prayers, was organised by Dhaka South City Corporation.
At all the congregations divine blessings were sought for peace and prosperity of the country as well as the Muslim Ummah.
During sermons, imams of many Eid congregations gave a call to shun the path of extremism as Islam teaches the path of peace and patience.
Thousands of devotees offered their Eid prayers at five congregations at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque since 7:00am.
Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation organised 409 Eid congregations in the capital.
Eid greetings were exchanged by president Abdul Hamid at a reception he hosted at Bangabhaban.
At a separate reception hosted by her at Ganabhaban, prime minister Sheikh Hasina also exchanged Eid greetings.
BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia who passed the Eid day in Old Dhaka Central Jail at Nazimuddin Road greeted people through members of her family, who went to meet her Wednesday afternoon.
In the port city of Chittagong, the main Eid congregation took place as usual at Jamiatul Falah National Mosque.
The main Eid congregations in the divisional headquarters of Khulna, Sylhet, Rajshshi, Barisal, Rangpur and Mymensingh were held respectively at Khulna Circuit House ground, Shahi Eidgah Maidan, Hazrat Shah Mokhdum Central Eidgah, Hemayet Uddin Central Eidgah, Collectorate Eidgah Maidan and Anjuman Eidgah Maidan, according to New Age correspondents.
The country’s biggest Eid congregations were held at Sholakia Eidgah Maidan in Kishoreganj and Gor-e-Shaheed Eidgah Maidan in Dinajpur.
Important public and private buildings were illuminated in the capital and elsewhere on the occasion.
Newspaper offices remained closed during the vacation but news updates were available online.
All the radio and TV networks ran special programmes.
Eid was, however, celebrated on Tuesday by a small number of believers at places in Chittagong, Barisal, Patuakhali, Bhola, Jhalakati, Pirojpur, Barguna and Satkhira districts, New Age correspondents reported.
Participants in Tuesday’s Eid ul Azha festival claimed they were the followers of Quaderia, Jahangiria and Chistia schools of spirituality and observed Eid the day Saudi Arabia observed it.
