Bangladesh Under-23 football team’s dream run in the Asian Games came to an end when they lost to mighty North Korea by 1-3 goals in their round of 16 match in West Java, Indonesia on Friday.
Striker Yu Son Kim, Han Yong and Kang Kuk Chol scored one goal each for last year’s runner-up side North Korea while Saad Uddin pulled one goal back for Bangladesh in the injury time.
Bangladesh, who advanced into the knock out stage of the Games for the first time in history with a 1-0 win over Qatar in their last group game, conceded two goals in the first half of the match.
Despite suffering a defeat against North Korea, who are 103-rank higher than Bangladesh (194th) in the latest FIFA rankings, Bangladesh fought hard till the final whistle.
The Korean side went ahead in the 13th minute when Yu Song Kim converted a penalty from the spot after Bangladesh defender Susanto Tripura handled the ball inside the box.
Three minutes later, Young Kim could double the margin for the Koreans but he saw his effort hit the side post after going round Bangladesh keeper Ashraful Islam Rana.
Han Young doubled the lead in the 38th minute when Yu Son Kim provided a defence splitting through to Young, who made no mistake to find the back of the net past Rana with a powerful strike.
North Korea continued to press in the second half and found their third goal in the 68th minute when Kang Kuk Chol tapped in a cut back from substitute forward Jyong Hyok from the right flank.
Korea went defensive after taking a 3-0 lead in the last part of the game that gave Bangladesh some space and the charges of Jamie Day pressed hard to get a goal.
Topu Barman’s header from a Jamal Bhuiyan’s free-kick went straight to North Korean keeper in the 81st minute.
Saad Uddin scored the consolation goal in the injury time when he side-volleyed home from a goal-mouth scramble following a cross of substitute midfielder Rabiul Hasan.
Moments later, Bangladesh could have scored another goal when Rabiul’s header went over the cross bar.

RESULT
Bangladesh Under-23 1 (Saad Uddin 90+) v North Korea Under-23 3 (Yu Son Kim 13, Han Yong 38,
Kang Kuk Chol 68)
