Two more ‘peddlers’ killed in ‘gunfight’

Two suspected drug peddlers were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at BSCIC area under Feni Sadar upazila early Monday, raising the death toll in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drive to 222 since May 15.
The deceased, Mohammad Mamun Morshed, 35, of Tongi, Gazipur and Md Al-Amin, 25, of Uttara, Dhaka North City, were named in the list of suspected Yaba peddlers prepared by the home ministry, RAB officials said.
During Monday’s countrywide raids suspected drug peddlers and addicts were nabbed with drugs, the police and the RAB said.
The RAB began the drive on May 4 and the police on May 18.
New Age Correspondent in Feni, quoting RAB-7 crimes prevention company-1 commander Safayet Fahim Jamil, reported, following tip off a temporary check post was set up by the RAB at Mahipal and the BSCIC area at Feni on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
At about 4AM, a speeding motorcycle crossed the Mahipal check post when RAB chased the riders who opened fire while crossing the check post at BSCIC area, said RAB officials.
RAB retaliated and chased them, they said.
As the firing stopped, Safayet claimed, RAB rescued two bullet hit men and took them to Feni District Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
He said that the RAB seized a pistol, five bullets and a motorcycle from the spot.
The RAB officer said that they also seized 24,700 Yaba tablets hidden in the oil tank of the motorcycle.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 33 suspected drug peddlers and addicts from different places in the capital in 24 hours ending Monday 6:00am and seized 2,660 Yaba tablets, 208 grams of heroin, 650 grams of hemp, five bottles of Phensedyl and four bottles of local liquor from their possession, said DMP officials.
The RAB arrested at Mouchak Bus Stand under Siddhirganj, Narayaganj suspended assistant sub-inspector Salauddin of Narayanganj Detective Branch of police and his driver Mohammad Rony with 10,000 pieces of Yaba tablets and Tk 2.83 lakh in cash, according to a RAB press release.
