Local people blocked Fulbari-Dinajpur Highway for around an hour after reckless driving claimed the life of yet another student at Ambari of Parbatipur in Dinajpur on Sunday.
The fatality happened only three weeks after student protests demanding road safety rocked the country.
Police said a shallow engine-driven vehicle killed
third-grader Antor Roy, 8, son of Promoth Roy at South Biswanathpur of the upazila around 8:00am while he was going to his Marigold Preparatory Kindergarten School.
With this, at least 12 school and college students were killed in road accidents across the country after the July 29 Kurmitola accident in Dhaka, which killed two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College as a bus competing with another one, ploughed through a crowd of students waiting for transports.
Reckless driving continued to kill people although thousands of students took to streets after the Kurmitola accident and protested against road transport sector anarchy for nine days prompting the government to launch traffic week on August 5 to restore discipline to the sector.
Parbatipur police station assistant sub-inspector Jayonto Roy said that a brick-loaded vehicle hit the bicycle which was carrying Antor when it got on the highway.
The boy died on the spot and the bicycle rider and another student were slightly injured, he said.
Local people blocked the highway for about an hour in protest at the accident.
Police seized the tractor but could not arrest anyone.
A case in this connection was under process.
