A man in his thirties succumbed to his injuries on Friday while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital in police custody, ten days after he was beaten and handed over to police for his alleged involvement with drug business in Rajshahi.
Local people caught Abdur Razzak, son of Mohammad Islam of Shiroil Colony Hazrapukur area in the city, with drugs and handed him over to the police on August 6 night after beating him, said Humayon Kabir, officer-in-charge of Chandrima Police Station of the city.
Locals seized 48 Yaba tablets from Razzak and police showed him arrest in a drug case on August 8.
Asking whether Razzak was involved in drug dealing, he said that an investigation was underway.
Razzak’s younger brother Mohammad Shahin claimed that drug peddlers of the area forcibly took him by a nearby pond from their house on August 6 night, beat him severely with iron rods and hammers, left him critically injured and then handed him over to
police.
He claimed that his brother was not involved with drug business and was beaten up as he protested against the drug peddling in the area.
Shahin said his brother gave him names of eight persons who beat him
up.
Shahin also complained that the Chandrima police refused to register a complaint when they went to the police station following the incident.
He said they would file a murder case in this connection.
