Two former Islamic University students reportedly committed suicide over love affairs on Thursday night, said police and classmates of the suicides.
Both of them were former students of finance and banking department of the university.
The suicides are Mumtahena Afroz Hena, 25, who was originally from Assasuni in Kushtia but used to live with her family in Jhenaidah town, and Rokonuzzaman Rokon, 27, who was from Damurhuda in Chuadanga but living in a shared house at Piaratala in Kushtia town.
IU proctor M Mahbubar Rahman told New Age that Mumtahena committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at her house in Jhenidah town at about 6:00pm while Rokon committed suicide by jumping under a Goalanda-bound speeding train at Moti Mia Railgate area in Kushtia town around 8:00pm, after hearing his ‘girlfriend’ committed suicide.
The actual reasons behind the suicides could not be known immediately, he added.
The deceased’s friends seeking anonymity, however, said they were in a love affair for a long time and Hena’s family did not accept the affair.
The Jhenaidah police suspected that non-acceptance of their affair might be the reason behind the death of the two persons.
The Poradah Government Railway Police Station officer-in-charge Azizul Huq said they recovered Rokon’s body from rail line and handed it over to his family.
Jhenaidah police station officer-in-charge Emdadul Huq Sheikh said they also handed Hena’s body to her family without postmortem examination. ‘We have been investigating into the matter,’ he added.
