A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the Rapid Action Battalion members at Purbakumarbhog under Louhajang in Munshiganj on early Friday, taking the death toll to 116 during the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drives since May 15.
The deceased, Mokbul Hossain, 36, of North Medenimondal in the upazila, was named in at least 12 cases, mostly under Narcotics Control Act, the RAB said.
Besides, the police and the RAB arrested scores of suspected drug peddlers and addicts in anti-drug drives in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country on Friday.
The New Age correspondent in Munshiganj, quoting assistant superintendent of police Mahitul Islam of RAB-11, reported that Mokbul was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the RAB personnel at Purbakumarbhog area during an anti-drug drive at about 3:15am on Friday.
The RAB official said they seized one pistol, two bullets, one magazine, 500 Yaba tablets, Tk 4,675 in cash and two mobiles from the spot.
In Dhaka, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 80 suspected drug peddlers and addicts from different places of the capital in 24 hours ending Friday 6:00am and seized 3,832 Yaba tablets, 5.39 kilograms of heroin, 7.07 kilograms of hemp and 50 bottles of Phensedyl from their possession, the metropolitan police officials said.
In Feni, RAB personnel arrested a suspected drug peddler Md Abdur Rahim, 30, from a bus counter on Shaheed Shahidullah Kaisar Road in the district town and seized 35,000 Yaba tablets on Thursday night, said RAB-7’s Feni company commander Shafayat Jamil Fahim.
