Ambassador Bernicat unharmed: US embassy in Bangladesh

The US ambassador Mercia Bernicat was unharmed as armed miscreants attacked her official vehicle at Mohammadpur area in Dhaka on Saturday night.
An official vehicle from the US Embassy in Dhaka, which was transporting the ambassador, was attacked by a group of armed adult men, some on motorcycles, in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka on Saturday, the embassy said in a press release on Sunday.
The ambassador and her security team departed the area unharmed, said the embassy.
There were no injuries to the ambassador, her drivers, security staff, the embassy said adding that two security vehicles sustained some damage.
The embassy appreciated Dhaka Metropolitan Police and security officials for their quick and professional response following the incident.
Vehicle of the outgoing ambassador Bernicat came under attack by a group of unidentified miscreants as it was about to leave the residence of Badiul Alam Majumder, secretary of civil society advocacy group Shusashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) at about 11:00pm on Saturday.
She was at Majumder’s Iqbal Road residence for attending a courtesy dinner arranged in her honour.
Police and embassy security stuff hurriedly escorted the ambassador to the vehicle sensing presence of the miscreants.
Foreign ministry director general Ferdousi Shahriar told New Age that she talked to the US embassy to know details of the incident.
The embassy also shared the press release on the incident with the foreign ministry, officials said.
No regular case was filed with the police and nobody was arrested on allegation of involvement in the incident, Shariful Islam, an operations official at the Mohammad Police Station, told New Age over phone on Sunday evening.
Majumder has, however, filed a general diary with the Police about the incident. He alleged that about 30 unidentified persons, armed with sticks and bricks, participated in the attacks.
The attackers also vandalised the windows and attempted to break through the main door of the house, he alleged.
Mohammadpur Police Station officer-in-charge Jamal Uddin Mir said they were investigating the attack.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam, in a statement on Sunday, condemned the attack on ambassador Bernicat.
