The police on Wednesday foiled a human chain in Barisal city organised by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party injuring 11 leaders and activists, including the party’s joint secretary general Mojibor Rahman Sarwar.
Barisal city BNP organised the human chain on Sadr road in Barisal at 10:30am demanding cancellation of Barisal city polls held on July 30 terming it ‘robbery’ and ‘farce’.
Barisal city BNP senior vice-president Moniruzzman Khan Faruq alleged that cops drove them out of the party office as leaders and activists were gathered there at about 11:00am for forming the human chain.
The leaders and activists took position on the two sides of the road.
As Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, who contested the Barisal mayoral polls, along with the party leaders got down from car, cops barred him from going to the party office.
Police assaulted and kicked the leaders and activists including Mojibor Rahman Sarwar as they sat on the street, witnesses said.
BNP organising secretary Bilkis Jahan Shirin and Barisal city unit vice-president Moniruzzman Faruq, among others, were injured in the police attack.
Later, a procession led by Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, also Barisal city BNP president, was brought out.
Local BNP leaders claimed 11 leaders and activists were injured in the police attack.
Barisal Metropolitan Police detective branch assistant commissioner Nasiruddin Ahmed denied the allegation of attack claiming that police removed BNP activists from roads to maintain peace and order in the city and keep traffic normal.
