The Appellate Division on Tuesday gave the High Court a new order to dispose of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’ appeal against the trial court verdict that had jailed her for five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust case by October 31.
The High Court missed the first deadline set by the Appellate Division earlier on May 16 to dispose of Khaleda’ appeal by July 31.
A four judges bench chaired by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain gave the fresh deadline after hearing Khaleda’s petition to cancel its directive to High Court to dispose of her appeal by July 31.
Later in the day, the High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman deferred its scheduled hearing on Khaleda’s appeal until today.
The bench told Khaleda’s lawyers that it would later give them timeframe to complete their arguments.
The bench also extended detained Khaleda’s bail until August 8 in the Zia Orphanage Trust case.
Khaleda’s lawyers prayed for adjournment of the hearing and extension of her bail expired on Tuesday.
