The Independence Day award winning singer Runa Laila said that Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal conferred on her by Dhaka University was one of the most remarkable recognitions of her career as a singer.
She received the gold medal and a cheque of Tk one lakh from DU vice chancellor professor Md Akhtaruzzaman at the Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Monday.
A music department student Urmi Ghosh, who secured the highest marks in BA (hons) examination held in 2017, was also named another winner of the medal.
She would receive the medal at the convocation of the university scheduled to be held in October.
Sponsored by ACI Foundation, Dhaka University introduced the medal in 2016 named after the legendary Nazrul Sangeet singer Feroza Begum.
Dhaka University arts faculty dean M Delwar Hossain, ACI Foundation chairman M Anis Ud Dowla, who is also a sibling to Feroza Begum, DU music department chairperson Tumpa Samaddar spoke at the programme presided over by Feroza Begum Memorial Trust Fund chairman and also DU treasurer M Kamal Uddin.
After receiving the award Runa Laila said, ‘It’s a special day in life. I’m receiving an award named after the legendary singer Ferora Begum from Dhaka University’s vice chancellor at the university.’
‘Receiving an award is always pleasant but this award is special and one of my best recognitions,’ Runa added.
‘The medal was introduced to continue the legacy of the legendary singer Feroza Begum, who dedicated her life for music,’ Anis Ud Dowla said.
‘Every year we honour a renowned singer of the country and the best student of Dhaka University’s music department’, said Anis adding that earlier they had honoured Sabina Yesmin and Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya with the medal.
Urmi Ghosh rendered a bhajan at the event.
Earlier the music and dance department students of the university performed.
