Bangladesh Nationalist Party claimed that Monday’s polls in Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet city corporations were another example of ‘violent farcical’ polls with police involvement in vote ‘terrorism’.
The party alleged that the ruling Awami League goons drove away its polling agents from nearly all polling
centres during the elections in three cities and stuffed ballot boxes in favour of Awami League mayor candidates.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the remarks at two separate news briefings at the party’s central office at Nayapaltan at around 4:00pm and 11:30am.
The BNP leader said although a small number of voters were able to cast vote in recently held Gazipur and Khulna city corporations polls, it was also not possible on the day’s three city polls.
Mentioning an incident of Rajshahi city poll, Rizvi said police seized documents of a polling agent of BNP at Nagarpara government primary school polling centre.
He said in other times Awami cadres under police protection used to go on rampage but this time police themselves showed their capacity of committing ‘act of terrorism’.
Rizvi said what they had feared about the three city polls under an ‘illegal’ government with its ‘subservient’ Election Commission was proved, saying that voters could not exercise their rights.
He said it was again proved that fair election is never possible under ‘illegal’ prime minister Sheikh Hasina and by her ‘subservient’ chief election commissioner.
A minimum fair election was not held in any of three city polls, Rizvi claimed.
Replying to a question, he said the decision of boycott by BNP’s mayor candidate Mojibor Rahman Sarwar in Barisal halfway through the poll was taken locally based on the local situation.
He said 24 polling agents of BNP had gone missing in Rajshahi.
Rizvi said officer-in-charge Kamal in Rajshahi city drove away BNP chairperson’s adviser Mizanur Rahman Minu from Polytechnic Institute polling centre.
The OC also drove away Rajshahi district BNP president Tofazzel Hossain Tapu and city unit general secretary Shafiqul Islam Milon from the polling centre, he said.
Rizvi said Awami cadres beat BNP supporters at Dashmari in Rajshahi and drove away polling agents of sheaf of paddy, BNP’s election symbol, from nearly all polling stations.
He alleged that goons were stamping in ballot papers on boat symbol at Binodpur Islamia College polling centre in Rajshahi driving away BNP polling agents.
In Barisal, Chhatra League and police drove away all polling agents of sheaf of paddy from Udoyan Secondary School in Barisal city, Rizvi said.
He alleged that Awami ‘goons’ confined BNP nominated mayor candidate to Barisal, Mojibor Rahman Sarwar and injured him.
In Sylhet, all agents of sheaf of paddy were driven away from MC College polling centre, Rizvi said.
The BNP leader said the present Election Commission is now a ‘parasite’ and ‘opponent’ to fair poll.
