National committee against fascism and imperialism on Sunday demanded an end to the attacks on teachers and students of universities and falsehood against Dhaka University professor Akmal Hussain over his remarks condemning Bangladesh Chhatra League’s atrocities on quota reform activists.
The leftist platform in a statement signed by Badruddin Umar expressed deep concern over ‘planned attack’ on and harassment and humiliation of teachers of Dhaka and Chittagong universities for supporting quota reform movement and demanding an end to assaults on students.
The statement also stated that intentionally distorting the remarks of Akmal Hussain at its rally on July 19 Dhaka University Teachers Association started a process to achieve ill wishes creating a troublesome situation.
It demanded that physical and professional security of Chittagong University teachers Maidul Islam and Ali Al Rajib be ensured.
Akmal at a rally of Teachers against Repression at the Dhaka University recently tried to rationalise the roles played by his colleagues Tanzimuddin Khan and Fahmidul Haq, as protectors of quota reform activists who had been targeted by rowdy activists of the ruling Awami League’s student body Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Tanzim and Fahmidul were being undermined by Chhatra League as they were not freedom fighters.
Professor Akmal argued that people’s non-participation in the Liberation War did not undermine their eligibility to protest against any injustice as prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her father, on whom all the wartime political activism were centred, did not physically participate in the war.
