Padatik Natya Sangsad will stage Gahonjatra today at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as part of the 2nd Dhaka International Monodrama Festival.
The eight-day festival, which will feature a total of 11 monodramas, has been organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and the International Theatre Institute’s Bangladesh Chapter, with help from the ministry of cultural affairs.
Gahonjatra, written by Rubaiyat Ahmed and directed by Sudip Chakraborthy, addresses the rise of extremism through the saga of an innocent woman named Salma.
It shows how the extremists try to establish supremacy of their particular strand of belief, rejecting all other belief systems. To this end, they use terror, slaughter whoever stands in their way and rape women.
In short, the play depicts the dangers of intolerance, violence, global political dynamics and the universal aspiration for peace and freedom.
Shamsi Ara Syka performs in the monodrama.
