Artistes of district Shilpakala Academy staged the play Bagher Shinni at Kabi Nazrul Auditorium at Rikabibazar in Sylhet on Friday.
The play, written and directed by Bhabatosh Roy Barman, depicts the lost traditional performing art named Bagher Shinnir Gaan which was popular at Sunamganj, Habiganj and Netrakona in Bangladesh and Assam State of India.
Well-off families in villages used to hire young men to look after their cattle and protect the animals at nights during the winter months.
The young men had to defend themselves and the cattle against attacks from vicious tigers at night.
To keep tigers away they used to sing together and prepare shinni at nights during the Bengali month of Magh. The practice came to be known as Bagher Shinnir Gaan.
Trainee artistes of the drama department of district Shilpakala Academy in association with the district administration staged the play as a part of their annual presentation.
Khalil Faysal, Ali Reza, Borhan Uddin, Adnan Sami, Abul Hasnat, Shamsul Huda, Saleh Ahmed, Amina Akter, Syeda Shahrina, Jessica Nawrin, Fahmida, Zillur Rahman, Tapos Nath and others acted in the play.
Deputy commissioner of Sylhet Numery Jaman and Sammilita Natya Parishad Sylhet president Mishfaq Ahmad attended the show.
