Bangladesh Nationalist Party has announced that, though symptom of fair elections is yet to be visible, the party will stay in the field of Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet City Corporation elections, scheduled for Monday, till the end.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the declaration at a news briefing at the party’s central office in Dhaka on Sunday.
At the press briefing, the BNP leader alleged that the police had been arresting the party leaders and activists, filing ‘false’ cases against them and raiding their houses in the three cities ahead of the polls.
Rizvi said that the police arrested BNP’s Sylhet city corporation poll campaign committee member secretary Abdur Razzak also the party’s central assistant  small credit affairs secretary.
He also alleged that supporters of the ruling party’s mayor candidate in Sylhet conducted subversive activities in the city in a planned way to implicate BNP leaders and activists.
The BNP leader claimed that the local administrations were openly working for the ruling party’s candidates in all the three cities.
He also alleged that additional stamped ballot papers were taken to Rajshahi from Dhaka. ‘Barishal is now in the possession of Awami cadres,’ he added.
