Activists of the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League allegedly vandalised the last roadside election meeting of AL mayoral candidate in Sylhet City Corporation elections Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran on Saturday night, hours before ending the electioneering.
Witnesses said that the two rival groups of the BCL were locked in a clash around 8-30pm following an altercation over having scope to address the roadside meeting held at the Keane Bridge are in the city.
They said that supporters of the both groups hurled chairs to the rivals, vandalising around 50 chairs at the venue, creating a chaotic situation in the programme.
Kotwali police officer-in-charge Mosharraf Hossain told New Age that the AL central organising secretary Ahmad Hossain intervened into the incident and stopped the BCL activists and then restarted the meeting.
‘Two youths were detained from the spot,’ the police officer said.
