Zahir Raihan of BKSP emerged as the new champion in the men’s 200-metre sprint event at the 14th National Summer Athletics Championship that ended at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday.
Zahir, who took part in his maiden national meet, took 21.70 seconds to win the race ahead of Bangladesh Army’s Shariful Islam (22.20 seconds).
In the women’s 200-metre section, Bangladesh Navy’s Sohagi Akhter beat team-mate and country’s fastest women Shirin Akhter to clinch the gold medal for the third time.
Sohagi took 25.10 seconds to win the race ahead of Shirin, who crossed the finishing line in 25.20 seconds.
Zahir, who also won the 400-metre event on the opening day of the meet, said that he was a bit nervous before competing in the 200-metre sprint since he had been out of the track for a long time due to injury.
‘I was scared to take part in the 200-metre event since I was out from the track for a long time due to injury,’ said Zahir.
‘But after recovering from injury I trained well and the good thing is that I have won it.’
The BKSP athlete, who reached the semi-finals of the World Youth Athletics 400-metre sprint, said that now his target was to do well in the forthcoming SA Games in Kathmandu.
Earlier on Friday, BKSP’s Hasan Mia ended the long reign of seven-time national championship winner Mezbah Ahmed of Bangladesh Navy to become fastest man of the country by winning the 100-metre sprint.
In the women’s 100-metre there was no upset as Bangladesh Navy’s Shirin Akhter clinched her seventh consecutive gold medal at national level with a win over team-mate Sohagi Akhter.
