Jatiya Party member of parliament Yahiya Chowdhury conducted campaigns for ruling Awami League mayoral candidate Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran in Sylhet on the last day of electioneering on Saturday violating the electoral code of conduct.
Yahiya accompanied by his party leaders was seen distributing leaflets among people in Taltala area at about 1:00pm and seek vote for Kamran as the electioneering ended midnight Saturday, city dwellers said.
The lawmaker campaigned for the AL candidate just an hour after the Jatiya Party extended support to the ruling party
candidate in Sylhet.
Yahiya, also Jatiya Party assistant general secretary, admitted that he distributed leaflets.
He said that his party activists handed several leaflets of Kamran to him immediately after he was coming out of a restaurant at Taltala and requested him to distribute among the pedestrians.
‘I could not understand the matter instantly. But, I realised later that it was not right,’ Yahiya said, adding that he would explain his position if the returning office served him show-cause notice.
Returning officer Alimuzzaman said that members of parliament cannot run electioneering in favour of any candidate in the city polls in accordance with the electoral code of conduct.
‘Show-cause notice must be served, if specific complaint is submitted in this regard,’ he said.
